Speech / Language
Children 1-3 months (English speaking or Bilingual Spanish/English) generally are able to do the following:
Receptive Language:
- Smiles at the sound of voice(s)
- Pays attention to sounds
- Startles at loud noises
- Looks in direction of sounds
- Becomes more active (e.g., by moving legs/arms) at seeing a bottle
Expressive Language:
- Makes sucking sounds
- May begin to use vowel sounds, coos and giggles
- Cries differently for hunger, pain, discomfort
Speech Intelligibility:
- Makes cooing noises
- Engages in vocal play
- Makes deep toned sounds such as grunting or growling
