Children 1-3 months (English speaking or Bilingual Spanish/English) generally are able to do the following:

Receptive Language: 

  • Smiles at the sound of voice(s) 
  • Pays attention to sounds 
  • Startles at loud noises 
  • Looks in direction of sounds 
  • Becomes more active (e.g., by moving legs/arms) at seeing a bottle

Expressive Language: 

  • Makes sucking sounds 
  • May begin to use vowel sounds, coos and giggles 
  • Cries differently for hunger, pain, discomfort

Speech Intelligibility: 

  • Makes cooing noises
  • Engages in vocal play 
  • Makes deep toned sounds such as grunting or growling
