Functional

Children 12-18 months generally are able to do the following:

  • Explores using utensils while eating with spilling
  • Undresses self with items such as hat, mittens, socks or shoes 
  • Holds hands under faucet and waits for adult to turn on water 
  • Attempts to clean up toys 
  • Pushes boundaries to get adult reaction 
  • Uses objects for their intended purpose (e.g., kissing a baby doll, using a phone)
  • Understands categories (e.g., balls, shoes, food) and knows where they are located 
  • Sustains attention to a preferred single activity (excluding screen time) for 3-5 minutes while playing with an adult
  • Explores sensory experiences with enthusiasm (e.g., music, paint, sandbox, water) 
  • Asserts own needs by pointing/guiding caregiver (e.g., when wanting a drink or a snack)
