Literacy

Children 12-18 months generally are able to do the following:

  • Participates in activities such as “peek a boo”, “so big”, “bye bye” 
  • Looks at the object when you say “Look at the…” 
  • Tells you they want an object by pointing at it 
  • Enjoys playing independently near peers
  • Imitates the way other children play
  • Responds to own name (e.g., comes to caregiver) 
  • Engages when called and participates when singing songs (e.g., “Head, shoulders, knees and toes”) 
  • Turns book right side up 
  • Begins to participate in book reading (e.g., repeating sounds and words, holding book, touching pictures) 
  • Begins matching some animal noises to the correct animal
