Functional

Children 19-24 months generally are able to do the following:

  • Copies activities such as wiping a spill, sweeping, combing hair 
  • Uses spoon with right side up and turns it around if handed spoon upside down
  • Finds a chair if can’t reach an item 
  • Follows simple directions, (e.g.,  “Close the cabinet”, “Put toys on table”, “Find your coat”, “Take my hand”)
  • Switches light on and off 
  • Pushes wheeled toys in and out of spaces by turning and backing up 
  • Attempts simple creative activities with adult support 
  • Sustains attention to a preferred single activity (excluding screen time) for 3-5 minutes independently 
  • Initiates independent exploration 
  • Combines related objects in play or routines (e.g., truck and garage, doll and stroller, spoon and cup) 
  • Follows simple directions requiring memory of object location 
  • Names or identifies absent objects and people 
  • Asserts own needs by independently accomplishing tasks, retrieving wanted item, and asking adult for help if needed (e.g., walking to sink if thirsty, reaching for toy on shelf) 
  • Holds hands under faucet and waits for adult to turn on water or turns it on themselves
  • Assists in cleaning up toys
