Children 19-24 months generally are able to do the following:
Receptive Language:
- Performs gestures such as opening/closing mouth, pulling earlobes, blinking eyes, patting cheek when prompted
- Follows simple instructions within daily routines (e.g., “Put your cup on the table.” “Throw it in the garbage.”)
- Regularly identifies new objects, pictures and people when named
- Performs actions words when asked (e.g., “Let’s jump like a bunny; how fast can you run?”)
Expressive Language:
- Combines a descriptive word with a noun (e.g., black cat or big ball)
- Correctly uses words such as “me”, “I”, “Mine”, and “you”
- Uses approximately 50 words (verbal or formal signs)
- Makes a selection when given options using words or gestures (e.g., “milk or water”)
- Combines 2 or 3 words that represent different ideas such as “Mommy come home?” or “Where kitty go?”
Speech Intelligibility:
- Uses many different consonant sounds in word pronunciation
