Children 24-30 months generally are able to do the following:

  • Objects to major change in routine 
  • Says “no” but will still do what was asked 
  • Puts things away in correct place using sorting techniques 
  • Mirrors real life activities during imaginative play (e.g., putting food items in bag as if leaving a store) 
  • Explores objects by poking or prodding; may take things apart to see how they work 
  • Sustains attention to a preferred single activity (excluding screen time) for 5 minutes despite distraction or interruption 
  • Initiates creative activities (e.g., asks to paint or color, makes up unique dances to music, sings made up melodies) 
  • Compromises a verbal direction in order to problem solve (e.g., uses hurried walk when told to use walking feet instead of running)
