Functional

Children 3-8 months generally are able to do the following:

  • Opens/closes mouth when food is offered 
  • Shows interest in mirror images (e.g. smiles and coos at own reflection 
  • Calms down within ½ hour when upset 
  • Shows preference for primary caregiver(s) 
  • Explores objects by mouthing, shaking and banging 
  • Attempts new skills (e.g., rolling, putting self on stomach, reaching and grabbing) 
  • Uses body and hands to problem solve (e.g., rotating their body to grab for a toy) 
  • Shows interest in and excitement to surroundings 
  • Investigates sights and sounds in the environment 
  • Seeks out novel objects
  • Reacts to bottle or breast (e.g., reaching towards it, opening mouth) 
  • Plays 2-4 minutes with adult nearby
  • Begins to imitate some movements and facial expressions (e.g., returning a smile, begin to clap)
