Speech / Language
Children 3-8 months (English speaking or Bilingual Spanish/English) generally are able to do the following:
Receptive Language:
- Responds to spoken “bye-bye” by looking to the door
- Smiles at the sound of caregivers voice
- Begins to make simple gestures such as shaking head for no
- Looks at primary caregivers as they are named
Expressive Language:
- Responds appropriately to different tones of voices (e.g., when hearing a calming tone they stop crying)
- Responds to sounds by making sounds (e.g., when they hear a sound of a toy)
- Uses different vocalizations to express joy and/or displeasure
- Plays with vowel/consonant sounds, coos and giggles (e.g., ma, da pa)
- Begins to use sounds, babbling gestures to get attention, comment, request or protest
- Blows raspberries
Speech Intelligibility:
- Laughs and squeals out loud
- Begins repeating syllables
- Makes more intentional deep toned sounds (e.g., grunting or growling)
