Speech / Language

Children 3-8 months (English speaking or Bilingual  Spanish/English) generally are able to do the following:

Receptive Language: 

  • Responds to spoken “bye-bye” by looking to the door  
  • Smiles at the sound of caregivers voice 
  • Begins to make simple gestures such as shaking head for no 
  • Looks at primary caregivers as they are named

Expressive Language: 

  • Responds appropriately to different tones of voices (e.g., when hearing a calming tone they stop crying) 
  • Responds to sounds by making sounds (e.g., when they hear a sound of a toy)
  • Uses different vocalizations to express joy and/or displeasure
  • Plays with vowel/consonant sounds, coos and giggles (e.g., ma, da pa)  
  • Begins to use sounds, babbling gestures to get attention, comment, request or protest 
  • Blows raspberries

Speech Intelligibility: 

  • Laughs and squeals out loud 
  • Begins repeating syllables 
  • Makes more intentional deep toned sounds (e.g., grunting or growling)
