Speech / Language

Children 30-36 months (English speaking or Bilingual Spanish/English) generally are able to do the following:

Receptive Language: 

  • Recognizes actions in pictures
  • Understands simple pronouns
  • Follows 2-step directions
  • Understands use of objects
  • Points to “where and What” in response to questions, and responds to “what doing?”

Expressive Language: 

  • Uses a variety of word combinations (e.g., “throw me the ball”, “I want more”.)
  • Uses a variety of word types (e.g., nouns, verbs, adjectives)
  • Uses sentences 3-4 words in length

Speech Intelligibility: 

  • By age 35 months, 90% of English speaking students have mastered the following speech sounds: /b/ /n/ /m/ /p/ /h/ /w/ /d/
  • By age 35 months, Bilingual Spanish/English students are still developing speech sounds but are not expected to have mastered sounds beyond vowels 
  • Speaks so about 75% of communication is understood by familiar listeners
