Literacy

Children 48-60 months generally are able to do the following:

  • Enjoys reading books and may have some simple books memorized
  • Understands that some words begin the same way 
  • Begins to match beginning sounds to words
  • Understands words are made up of separate syllables
  • Identifies 10 letters of the alphabet
  • Produces 10-20 letters sounds correctly
  • Knows some features of a book (e.g., title, author)
  • Decides if two words rhyme 
  • Identifies story related events, problems, resolutions
  • Sequences major events and characters in a story without pictures
