Literacy

Children 5-6 years old generally are able to do the following:

  • Asks and answer questions about fiction and nonfiction text 
  • Shows an understanding of phonological awareness skills (identify and produce rhyme, segment and segment phonemes,   syllables and words)  
  • Identifies and label letters and the sounds they make, including long and short vowel sounds
  • Reads high frequency sight words and emergent-reader text 
  • Engages in group reading activities with purpose and understanding
