Children 5-6 years old generally are able to do the following:

  • Takes turns 
  • Engages in games with accepted rules and limits such as tag or creative playground games
  • Shows interest in playing with other children but may still need help from adults to solve problems  
  • Follows classroom rules, routines, and transition with minimal reminders 
  • Uses words to express their emotions
  • Follows most rules regarding treatment of others and care for materials
  • Prefers to play with friends rather than by self, and show awareness of other people’s feelings
  • They can transition smoothly and adapt to unpredictable changes
  • They work cooperatively with other children towards a common goal, create creative play scenarios, and independently make new friends
