Children 5-6 years old generally are able to do the following:

Receptive Language:

  • Asks and answers questions

Expressive Language:

  • Speaks in phrases and sentences between 6-8 word with nearly normal grammar
  • Uses complete sentences with all verb tenses
  • Uses negative interrogatives, indefinite forms (e.g., nobody, no one)
  • Uses adjectives to describe objects and can repeat sentences
  • Participates in conversations with different people
  • Describes familiar people, places, things and events
  • Understands and use regular plural nouns and verbs

Speech Intelligibility:

  • Speaks so about 90% of communication is understood by unfamiliar listeners with a range of 90-100%
  • English-speaking students are developing the following consonant sounds: voiced “th,” /r/, “zh” as in “equation”
  • Spanish-speaking students are developing the following consonant sounds: trill R and /s/
