Children 5-6 years old generally are able to do the following:
Receptive Language:
- Asks and answers questions
Expressive Language:
- Speaks in phrases and sentences between 6-8 word with nearly normal grammar
- Uses complete sentences with all verb tenses
- Uses negative interrogatives, indefinite forms (e.g., nobody, no one)
- Uses adjectives to describe objects and can repeat sentences
- Participates in conversations with different people
- Describes familiar people, places, things and events
- Understands and use regular plural nouns and verbs
Speech Intelligibility:
- Speaks so about 90% of communication is understood by unfamiliar listeners with a range of 90-100%
- English-speaking students are developing the following consonant sounds: voiced “th,” /r/, “zh” as in “equation”
- Spanish-speaking students are developing the following consonant sounds: trill R and /s/
