Gross / Large Motor

Children 8-12  months generally are able to do the following:

Gross Motor:

  • Sits independently
  • Gets to a sitting position without assistance 
  • Gets from sitting to crawling or prone (lying on stomach) position 
  • Lowers self from furniture without flopping or falling

Crawling: 

  • Crawls forward on belly 
  • Assumes hand and knee position  
  • Creeps on hands and knees 
  • Crawls/cruises on hands and knees

Standing:

  • Pulls self up to standing position 
  • Holds onto rail in standing position without resting chest on it 
  • Stands momentarily without support 
  • Leans down to pick up object from standing position, then stands back up

Walking:

  • Walks while holding furniture 
  • Walks holding on to furniture with one hand
  • May walk two or three steps without support
  • Proforms throwing motion with balls or toys
